State Organ & Tissue transplant Organization Goa Medical College organized a
full-day Continuous Nursing Education Programme on “LIVING WITH CKD
EMPOWERING NURSES TO CARE MORE” which focused on kidney Disease
and the modalities of treatment.
A total of 100 participants for the CNE were handpicked from the departments
dealing with CKD patients, Dialysis units and ICU and Transplant Units. The CNE
was a combination of Educational sessions by the nurses and session based
activities like quiz, roleplay, describing the pathways, etc. Dr. Preeti Varghese
Joint Director of SOTTO Goa moderated all the activities and sessions giving her
valuable insights and expertise on the topics.
The CNE Focused on the entire journey of a patient suffering from Chronic Kidney
Disease and the options of the treatments available, renal replacement therapies
like Hemodialysis and peritoneal Dialysis. Where a patient has to regularly
undergo dialysis with medications to maintain the patient.
The long term treatments like Kidney Transplant were also discussed in detail and
the types of kidney transplant like Living donor Kidney Transplant in which
patients near relative / Next of Kin can donate one of his kidneys or a deceased
donor kidney Transplant in which a brain dead Organ Donors Kidney can be
transplanted.
Organ Transplant gives a better quality of life which allows patients to perform all
regular activities like a healthy person they can work, eat, drink, have a social life
free from all the machines.
The CKD patients can come and get themselves evaluated at the Joint Transplant
Clinic at Super Specialty Block Goa Medical College on every Tuesday and
Friday. It provides patients a hassle free consultation by fast forwarding the
process of patient workup for Living Donor Kidney Transplant and enlisting for
Deceased Donor Kidney Transplant.
The operation theatre preparedness during the Organ retrieval and Transplant
Process and important aspects were discussed. The crux of the entire organ
donation and transplant programme lies in the well-being of the Organ recipient.
To ensure the best outcome for the transplanted patients, a session on post-
transplant care was conducted.
The program concluded with the valedictory function, at which Dr Preeti Varghese
handed the guest speakers a certificate and token of appreciation.
